Contra-Shear® Rotary Drum Thickener

The Contra-Shear rotary drum thickener (RDT) cost effectively reduces liquid content of slurries and sludge in a variety of municipal and industrial applications. The RDT is comprised of a flocculation tank, multistage rotary drum constructed out of Vee-Wire®, wash system, collection basin and control panel.

Chemically conditioned sludge is fed to the bottom of the flocculation tank where it flows upward and exits at the top onto the feed end of the rotary drum. The flocculation tank features a variable-speed mixer that keeps the flocs in suspension. Once inside the rotary drum, free liquid is separated from the flocculated solids and drains through the Vee-Wire slots into the collection basin.

A continuous spiral blade welded inside the screen drum along with the rotation of the drum assists in the thickening of the solids. The spiral blade has adjustable deflectors that allow the operator to control sludge residence times. The screen drum is cleaned by a pressurized water spray system.  Sludge residence time is also controlled by adjusting the drum rotation speed.
