Passive Intake Screens

Intakes for drinking water plants, fish hatcheries, industrial process water, power plant cooling water, desalination plants and many other applications require careful design consideration in order to responsibly protect the aquatic life at the intake.

Johnson's passive intake screens are designed to provide a low and even slot velocity, typically less than 0.5 f/s / 0.135 m/s, to protect aquatic like and minimize debris impingement

The Johnson Screens® intake design offers many benefits.

  • Low cost
  • Limited maintenance
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Easy cleaning
  • No disposal of debris
  • Adaptability

Hydroburst System

To restore efficient screen performance, Johnson Screens Hydroburst system maintains screen cleanliness by generating a periodic blast of air through the screen assembly. For certain applications, slide rails offer a cleaning alternative by raising the screen to the water’s surface.

This system has four primary components:

  • A compressor for recharging the air receiver tank
  • A receiver tank which stores the compressed air supplied by the compressor
  • An assembly of air-actuated valves and piping, which connects the receiver to the water intake
  • A control panel, for manual or automatic operation

The typical backwash procedure cleans each water intake sequentially at regular intervals.
